Lucky Strike

November 9, 2011 · by Ari ·

A few weeks ago Hermano was given a pass for 2 hours of free bowling at Lucky Strike for up to 8 people. For those of you that don’t know, Lucky Strike is like a fancy bowling alley that is also a full restaurant and bar. As John put it, it’s “businessman central”. Apparently Hermano thinks all my friends are cooler than his so the two of us went along with Steve, Jason, Nacho and John.

While we were waiting for everyone with real jobs to get out of work, Hermano and I hung out at the house with the puppies.

We got there a little before our reservation so we sat down and had some drinks

Unfortunately I’ve come down with some awfulness that is prob just a bad cold, but feels like the plague, so I had water when I really wanted a beer and even still felt progressively worse as the night went on. But that didn’t stop me from at least trying to have some fun!

I like this picture because I look skinnier in it. That's how I judge the quality of a picture. Sorry Steve.

It was obviously a night of serious bowling

My score from both games combined was 85. I am the best person ever to bowl against. Guaranteed win. Except, the second game I did beat Hermano. John and I spent most of the night catching up because we hadn’t seen each other since our pedicures and I MISSED him!! That is, when we weren’t being interrupted by pokes and glares and angry words about how we were holding up the game. Whoops. Sorry friends. John actually bowled pretty well, but spent most of the night complaining about the getting up and down from his seat and energy spent throwing the ball.

He had a long day of singing and dancing. Hard work my friends. 🙂 And to make matters worse, he had to deal with this

And then there was this

Then Steve made us mess with the curtain to be his photo back drop because he thinks every road is his race track and every place we go is his photography studio. 🙂

So of course John and I did a prom pose

At one time we referred to each other as hubby and wifey. Of course, I was the hubby and he was the wifey, but that’s a long story…

I’m so glad we got to go!! And to get the bowling, shoes and 2 appetizers for free? Pretty sweet deal. I wish we would have gotten some food pictures, because this my friends was NOT bowling alley food! They have salads and fancy sandwiches and even some unique flavor combos! I got 2 chicken sliders with tomato soup and it was delicious. Definitely did not taste super healthy, but what can ya do.

It has not been the healthiest week. Other than my physical therapy (which does feel surprisingly like a work out), I haven’t worked out since Monday and I just drowned my sickness sorrows in a bowl of pumpkin ice cream. When I’m sick, all I want to do is sit around and eat ice cream all day. For me, saving up all day for my 4 ounces when I feel like death warmed over is actually kind of an accomplishment. I hope I feel better soon because I am getting super antsy and I want to get out there and RUN!!!! Tomorrow was supposed to be 9 miles, and it’s just not gonna happen 🙁 Doesn’t mean we’re not moving straight to 10 though next week. I will not be set back. I have been dreaming about those double digits for a long time now!

Have a good night friends!!

Our Halloween

November 1, 2011 · by Ari ·

Hi friends! How was everyone’s Halloween? Ours was perfect. I had been so bummed thinking I was going to have to work on Halloween, but it all worked out and we were able to cancel rehearsal and I was able to spend a relaxing night with my fav guys which was exactly what I needed! Steve, Hermano, Winston and Clementine left around 5pm to head over to Jason’s. “Winston! Clementine! Wanna go for a ride to uncle Jason’s?!” Winston knows English better than Clementine and started whining and running around in circles. So cute. We have to spell things like ride, treat, and walk in front of him if we’re not actually planning to make it happen. Learned that lesson the hard way. As soon as we opened the car door, they both jumped right in, tails wagging.

Once we got there, we put Steve and Hermano on trick or treater duty and Jason and I headed to the store to buy some things we needed for dinner. We made “spaghetti” and spicy meat sauce

with a spinach salad

and pumpkin chocolate chip cookies.

Everything was delicious and I will be posting recipes ASAP!

After dinner and once trick or treating died down (Jason gets sooo many! We ran out of candy. Whoops.) We played with the puppies and Winston got to spend some quality time with his girlfriend Nico.

You can’t see it too well in the picture above, but this year, Winston dressed up as a rooster!

And Clementine was a bee!

One of my students suggested we take them trick or treating and that people should pass out dog treats! Brilliance. Unfortunately, I don’t think the rest of the world has caught on, so we gave them our own treats.

Does it make me an old lady is my perfect Halloween is staying in watching movies, cooking dinner, and dressing up my puppies?

What’s your favorite part of Halloween?

Best Friends

October 30, 2011 · by Ari ·

October 30th is one of my favorite days of the year. Why, you ask? My very best friend Bethany was born! I have a few friends that fall under best friend status, but I only have one Bethany. We’ve been friends for about 12 years. She has been there with me through all of my crazy times. She was there when I first experienced true loss. We experienced it together and because of her, I was able to get through it. She understands me in a way no one else in this world (not even Steve) does. We have watched each other grow up, change, evolve and become newer, better versions of ourselves. We have lived across the country, we have lived together, we have had fights ending in tears, and we have laughed harder than I ever knew I could laugh together. She is my rock. My person (for you fellow Grey’s Anatomy lovers). We get each other, and with Bethany I can always just be myself. I never have to pretend or put on a happy face or pretend I’m not excited about something nerdy. I can’t imagine my life without her.

Last night, we went out to celebrate! We started at Valle Luna where apparently the “tall” beer is the size of your head!

Whoops.

There was food. It was okay. Nothing special in my opinion. Well, Jason’s pollo fundido that went in the deep fryer and was then smothered in cheese was pretty delicious, but nothing else that I tasted had me all that impressed. But we sat outside next to the lake with the ducks that Kara and I often run at, which was lovely.

After dinner, we returned to mi casa for present opening, cupcakes and games!

I’m not a good person to share cards with, I took up all the space.

Bethy had been looking for a grey purse, but hadn’t found anything she liked, and she never splurges on nice things for herself, so Steve, Jason, and I pitched in together to get her this super cute grey Coach purse, with just a little color pop!

She loved it!! I was so happy! I LOVE gift giving!!!!

On the way home, we had stopped at Whole Foods for more beer. I definitely did not need more beer and in my tipsiness ended up spending $15 on Larabars and Mojo bars. Whoops. I was done with alcohol for the night 😉 The rest of the group got a few beers to try. Some we knew would be a success

However, some–Le Freak–were an utter failure. Bethany exclaimed “Le Freak sucks!!!” Jason made this face.

The puppies were very excited about all the extra attention company brought them.

“GET AWAY!!!!!! Aunt Bethany is paying attention to ME!!”

“Look, I’m cute, love me.”

“I love you new friend Liz! Please stay here forever. Mom says you might move to AZ. Please make it be true!!!!!!”

We ate NOT Skinnified Tres Leches cupcakes. Not everyone likes their birthday food skinnified, so I try to oblige 😉

And we played board games, laughed, and acted a little like children.

Thank you, Bernie for giving birth to the most amazing friend I have ever known and giving us reason to celebrate!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BETHY!!!!! LOVE YOU!!!!

Running for Donuts

October 26, 2011 · by Ari ·

Hello friends! This Wednesday started out absolutely perfectly! Well, maybe not started out, but within the first hour it got fabulous. Getting out of bed at 5:45 this morning was no picnic because I stayed up too late working on my running playlist on my ipod. I finally got out of bed, was running late and then my stupid GPS did not give me correct directions and my phone wouldn’t work and blah blah blah. But finally about 10 minutes late, I met up with Kara at Kiwanis Park. Can you believe I actually needed my GPS to drive there? For some reason, I have never actually been the driver when going and I don’t pay attention. Ever.

Kara and I started out on our run around the park and my legs felt tiiiiired. Like lead. Maybe it was my interval run Sunday, followed by Monday’s hike, followed by spin yesterday? Also, there were several small hills throughout the park and this girl is used to flat flat flat. Although our duck filled lake route has some small inclines, these were definitely steeper. Kara and I both acknowledged that today was seeming super challenging, but I gave us a little pep talk (which I needed just as much as her) and realized that we were actually making pretty decent time. I said “I have a surprise for you, but we have to rock the end of our run for you to get it!” When we finished, I showed her this amazingness

My previous (and the only time I had ever actually done 4 miles before) 4 mile time was 40:58. Almost 2 whole minutes off!!!!

And the best part, I didn’t realize until later

We ran our 4th mile in 8:57!!!!!! I don’t think I have EVER run a sub 9 min mile before!!! I almost cried. I know I will most certainly cry when I cross that half marathon finish line. I know I’ve said it over and over again, but I just never imagined that I would be able to do this. I was the kid in PE who walked at the back of the pack when we were supposed to run the mile. I told myself for so many years that I couldn’t do things. I so believe that it is all mental, and that we can do anything if we want it badly enough. I need a shirt for the race that says “I can do anything.” Nothing makes me feel better than those 4 words.

Now onto the super fun part (as much fun as wanting to do at a 9 min pace is, food is much more fun)! On our last long run, we ran by Bosa Donuts.

It smelled so freaking good that we wanted to just stop right there and get a donut before finishing our run, but we knew that if we stopped, we would never stop again that wasn’t a good idea. We did promise ourselves that eventually we would go try a donut though. I honestly cannot tell you the last time I went out for a donut.  We walked in and I was so overwhelmed I didn’t even know where to start.

Today is Mona’s birthday (YAY!!! Happy birthday my amazing friend!! I love you!!!) so we were bringing a box of donuts to Starbucks with us. We carefully selected 12 donuts (who has a hard time choosing 12? Apparently us) including what ended up being my favs: blueberry cake and buttermilk. It smelled so freaking amazing. Kara in all of her excitement exclaimed “We’re going to be consumed by donut air!!!!!” And we were. We left with this

So excited we could hardly contain ourselves

When we finally got to Starbucks, I got an other delicious iced coffee with sf vanilla and sf peppermint. Just like yesterday.

And when the line died down, we dug into the donut box! We wanted to sample lots of them, so we got plastic knives and went to town!

I took pretty small tastes of several of them, probably totaling about a whole donut all together. I was trying to keep it closer to half a donut. Maybe we’ll just pretend it was more like half 😉 After we dug in, the box looked like this

Mona with her birthday (and not just any birthday–21!!!) donut

While I was there, I had an unexpected visit with an old co-worker, as well as getting to see Bekki and Amelia and one of my favorite student mom’s, Beth!! Beth has the three loveliest girls on Earth and it is no surprise because she is totally amazing herself and any time I see her, she always makes me smile! Plus I hardly ever get to see Amelia and she makes my heart happy, and Bekki I just love. Amazing morning.

I also helped Kara set up her new blog!!!! “Ranting and Running” Go check it out!!!

Thanksgiving Recipes

October 23, 2011 · by Ari ·

It’s almost here, it’s almost here!!!!!! My very favorite time of year!!!!!

For me, the holiday season kicks off every year with my best friend Bethany’s birthday on October 30th. I plan for Bethy’s special day and then immediate switch gears into holiday craziness. I know most people enjoy the holidays, but I’m a little nuts about it. Shopping, cooking, spending time with family, finding the perfect gifts–it all just makes me so happy!!!!

Last year, Steve and I had just moved into our house and gotten Winston and we hosted Thanksgiving for the first time. In previous years we would do Thanksgiving lunch at his mom’s then dinner at my mom’s and we were dying to bring everyone together and take over the hosting duties. Our mom’s were both happy to let us take over. I went ALL out and did brunch and dinner and cooked everything without any healthiness in mind. I ended the day exhausted and just not feeling so great about myself. I mean, don’t get me wrong, it was an AMAZING day and I loved the company, but this year I definitely plan on doing things differently.

I’ve come a long way in my eating and healthy to me no longer means strict calorie budgets and things that I pretend are good, but no one else wants to eat. I am finally in a place where I can enjoy my food and enjoy eating food that makes me feel good and fuels my body. So this Thanksgiving, I am making things I actually want to eat. Things that will taste good, that everyone will love, and that I will feel good about. I’m so excited to do a balanced Thanksgiving that is both healthy and even a little bit indulgent–you gotta have the best of both worlds!

That being said, it is time for menu planning! I would love recipe ideas and suggestions for dishes that will make this Thanksgiving extra special.

***Please share your favorite Fall/holiday/anytime recipes!!!***

Even if they aren’t necessarily healthy–I can modify 🙂 I would love to see the recipes that everyone else loves!

Here are some of the highlights from last year’s Thanksgiving Extravaganza!

Back then Clementine did not exist and Winston was so new to us that he was carried around and adored like a king. This is Steve’s sister Ashleigh with him.

“Hello and welcome to my Thanksgiving. We will be starting with chocolate chip pumpkin bread french toast!”

“And yes, I do plan on wearing my onesie pjs all day long. This is my party and I’ll look ridiculous if I want to!”

And copy cat Starbucks pumpkin scones

Winston loved all the attention he got. This is him and Hank (my step dad).

Mom, Hank, Charlie and Winnie Bear!

Everyone loves my puppy, but look I love him most!

I invited all my favorite peeps including several friends to stop by between family visits and celebrate. This is my fabulous friend John!

Me, John, Michelle and Hermano

I took care of almost all of the food that came from our house, but I left a very special and important job up to Steve

He was the master of the turkey!

“Oh yeah, master of the turkey, you’re so cool. Why isn’t it ready yet, huh?!?!?!”

I forgot how much food I made! There was a cheeseball

And fresh home baked bread!

Roasted garlic mushrooms

Finally, we all sat down to dinner

Before we were “Ziskin-Bailey” 😉

The best part! The wish bone! Make a wiiiissssshhhhh…..

Grrrrrrrr 🙁

I am competitive, and thus, a sore loser!

“It’s okay, I will drown my sorrows in the sugar coma that will be dessert.” Fresh out of the oven brownies a la mode.

And pumpkin cheesecake (this was actually a healthy recipe that I plan to recreate this and every year!)

I absolutely loved hosting my first Thanksgiving and I can’t wait to do it again, this time a little smarter and a little healthier! I am lucky to have lots of family that I love so much and I can’t wait (especially after this crazy Fall) to get to spend some quality time with the most important people in my life!

What are your Thanksgiving plans? Please don’t forget to send your fav recipes! Happy almost holiday season everyone!

Eddie’s Birthday

October 17, 2011 · by Ari ·

Last night, Steve and I went out to PF Changs with our favorite Starbucks friends to celebrate out friend Eddie’s birthday. There were only 8 of us there, but it ended up being the perfect sized group and the three people I didn’t know very well I liked a lot. Steve made Eddie pose for photo testing because he’s super photogenic

Charlie and Mona wanted to pose too!

Mona’s face is priceless. I love that girl!

When I opened the menu I started to stress out a little bit and proceeded to act like a total freak by looking up all the nutritional info on my phone. Yes, I’m crazy and I admit this. I’m working on it. The more I looked at the info and realized that every dish contained 2-5 servings, I started to freak out calmly figure out how to make a smart decision on how to proceed. I ended up ordering what I wanted and asking them to pack half of it in a to go box, so now I have a delicious lunch to look forward to today also. There is always a solution when it comes to making smart food choices, it is just so easy to get overwhelmed and either not enjoy yourself at all, or make a less than fabulous choice.

Dinner was good, but not amazing. I used to love PF Changs, but honestly I am just kind of over chains for the most part. If I’m going to go out to eat, I want it to be somewhere unique where I can try something different, and if it is Asian food, I really just want it to be sushi. I have no interest in the rest other than what I could more healthily and tastily make myself at home (stir fry, pad Thai, etc).

But the company was great. Steve became besties with Luke, a new-ish (at least to me) barista as they laughed about nerdy boy internet things that I don’t understand. Kara and I planned the next two weeks of our training (which hopefully will include a SLUMBER PARTY!!!!!)

And we all had a great time. Oh yeah, and there was some chopstick funniness in there as well…

This is Tori. I didn’t really know her before last night, but she is funny and fabulous!

Aaaannnd my Chocolate Peanut Butter Rice Krispy Treats were a hit! TAAAAADDDDAAA!!!!

When we got outside, Steve wanted us to pose with the horse statue. Of course it took so much convincing for my to climb things and pose ridiculously in public. I normally have so much more class. 😉

I’m glad I’m not the only ridiculous one!

Then of course the night wouldn’t be complete without a moomoo

Still not 100% sure how or why this happened…

Such a fun night! Happy birthday Eddie!!

5 miles? Yup, I can run that!

October 15, 2011 · by Ari ·

Whooohoooo!!!! 12 hour day work week is over and I survived! Last night in rehearsal, I started to feel it really catching up to me, but I came home, went to bed early, and feel much more ready to take on today! Let’s back track to Thursday morning. Up until Thursday, I had been doing all my training runs by myself, which I actually don’t mind, and I wasn’t expecting to enjoy running with anyone else to be honest. I was afraid one of us would slow the other down or I would feel self conscious, and it also seemed pointless being that I am not someone who really talks while I run. Regardless, I met Kara bright and early Thursday morning at a lake in Chandler to go for a run together.

The sun was just barely coming up and it was beautiful outside. I was surprised to REALLY enjoy the company! The route ended up being kind of an adventure. We were running, then all of the sudden the trail ended and we had to jump a couple low fences and run through this apartment complex. It was different, but it kept things interesting, that’s for sure! We discovered that 1 lap around the lake was about a mile, so we made three laps with all negative splits! Whoot! I believe it was something like 10:47 (it takes these legs about a mile to warm up, and I find that taking that first mile nice and slow makes a HUGE difference to me!), 10:20, 9:53. I could actually look it up in my Garmin for something more exact, but that takes actually getting up off my butt which is totally not happening right now haha. Our last lap, we encountered a flock of ducks just hangin out in our pathway that for some reason totally cracked us up. It is so nice to have someone to share the experience with and LAUGH with! Luckily, Kara and I are really at the same place fitness wise, which makes sense considering we have pretty much the same work out routine. I discovered that I don’t actually have to be a hermit with my running, and company is an amazing thing!

Yesterday, I grudgingly took the day off from working out. It’s been helping so much with my energy level and overall happiness to wake up early and get it finished. I feel more accomplished and productive during the rest of the day! But I knew that since I was running a new distance today, I needed the break. So yesterday, I slept in (well until 6:45 haha), went to work, had an amazing dinner break at True Foods with my assistant choreographer Tasha, and returned to the theater for our final rehearsal before tech. We had a great rehearsal and I am so excited for this show.

If you live in the Phoenix area, please please please, come see Aladdin Jr @ Greasepaint! We open this coming Friday and run for 2 weekends with Friday shows @ 7pm and Sat/Sun matinees @ 2pm. I’m really proud of the work the kids, and all of the artistic staff has put into this show. My harem dancers are rock stars and they impress me every single night!

Okay, onto this morning’s excitingness!!! So now that I am full on in half marathon training mode, it means that my long run every week is a distance I have never run before. Up until I began my training, the farthest I had gone EVER was 3 miles and it was NOT easy. 2 weeks ago it was 4 miles, last week was the 5K (not a new distance, but my first race!) and today was 5 MILES!! Kara arrived at my house at 6:30 this morning. I had planned our run to end at Great Harvest Bread Company which is right across the street from Seattle Espresso (best coffee EVER) and a cute little farmers market. I LOVE having something fun as the end destination of my run. It makes it all worth it!

I was pleasantly surprised at how great I felt during most of the run. We took it slow and steady and I didn’t start to really feel tired until about 4.5 miles. We are not the fastest runners out there, but today Kara and I ran 5 miles for the very first time!

We got close to negative splits, but no cigar. We did do mile 5 in 9:33, however! I am still so amazed by things I never thought I could do. It makes me wonder how many other things in life I perceive as unachievable, or out of reach, that I could actually accomplish. I am a very goal oriented person, and there is almost nothing that makes me feel better than meeting my goals. Today I feel awesome. After we finished, we enjoyed a delicious sample of pumpkin chocolate chip bread (OMG AMAZING!!!) and egg white and turkey sandwiches. I could only eat half–I just don’t have much of an appetite RIGHT after I run. Of course, now I’m hungry again. Then we walked across the street and I did something I have not done in a LONG time.

I used to be awful about my coffee drinks. I had no idea just how bad they were for me, and my very favorite was always Seattle Espresso’s White Russian Mocha. I haven’t one in well over a year, but today I treated myself to a 12 oz double shot non fat hot white russian mocha. It was like heaven.

Then, we walked around the farmers market a bit, I bought some cilantro and a butternut squash. Random, right? Well I ran into Dani and she mentioned a recipe for butternut squash cupcakes which sounded amazing so I had to buy one. After, you know, dancing around with it like a total freak. Can’t take me anywhere 🙂 Now I desperately need a shower and a snack, then I’m off to 6 hour tech rehearsal! Happy Saturday everyone!

Whisked Away

October 12, 2011 · by Ari ·

Wayyyyy back in June, I promised Jason what I thought would be a pretty amazing 30th birthday present–a private (ish–6-8 people) cooking class from Whisked Away. Whisked Away was started by a chef named Maggie and she has all these cool cooking classes right out of her home! So you get to cook in a real normal home kitchen–I mean it was a little fancy, but not like things you couldn’t have in your own home. It took a lot of time and energy to coordinate scheduling with 6 different people with different schedules as well as Maggie’s busy class schedule, but we finally (3.5 months later) got it together!

It actually could not have worked out more perfectly. Race in the morning, cooking class in the evening! Rehearsal in between–wah. When we walked in, there were chairs and recipe packets all set up for us. Luckily, we only sat for the first 10ish minutes–I am a doer, not a watcher and I was getting antsy! As soon as we started cooking, the class began to exceed all of my expectations. First of all, can we talk about how they let you bring wine?!

Also, they had the dinner table all set up for us. So nice!

The class we chose was titled “Elegant Dinner Party”, a 5 course meal including tomato dip, zucchini gratin, polenta souffle, stuffed tenderloin, and bread pudding. I was a little disappointed when I realized that we didn’t get to make each all of it–we each chose a course to work on. But I quickly realized how ridiculous it would have been to have 6 versions of everything! Our group included Steve, Jason, Bethany, Steve’s friend Josh and his girlfriend Ashley. I told Jason he got to choose first since it was his birthday present and of course he chose the meat, and Bethy asked to work on it with him. I quickly grabbed dessert. I know. You’re shocked, aren’t you? Steve wanted the appetizer (tomato dip) so that he could be done more quickly and photograph. Ashley chose the zucchini and Josh chose the polenta.

I was the star student and finished first, so I got to assist with the tomato dip and the polenta. I made sure to rub it in everyone’s face and Jason tried to accuse me of taking the easiest dish! I just really love dessert, okay?!

I must confess that as soon as we looked at the ingredients for all the dishes, my eye immediately went to words like heavy cream and butter. And the measurements next to them 2 cups, 12 tablespoons. I had a little bit of a mini freak out in my mind, and I wanted to say “Oh, would you mind if i went and bought some fat free half and half instead?” I don’t remember the last time I bought HEAVY CREAM. 6 months ago, I wouldn’t have eaten any of it. Not a bite. And I would have cried on the way home. Instead, I breathed, gave myself a pep talk, and let myself relax a little with a couple glasses of wine. I kept my portions small so that I wouldn’t feel guilty, and just let myself enjoy my evening. It was hard at first, but then it wasn’t. And I realized how far I’ve come in finding balance. This Sunday, I made 2 accomplishments: running a race, and eating heavy cream. What a weird sentence. I fully believe they were both equally important to my health, because healthy living begins with the mind 🙂

As we continued on in the cooking, I started talking more to our teacher Kaylyn and Andrea. Turns out they are both runners with an interest in healthy living and Kaylyn has her own work out clothing business! We talking about healthy living blogs, running, training, cooking, and life in general. I was so happy to talk to people who have run races and have similar interests! Their company was definitely an added bonus and a highlight of the evening! I can’t wait to order some of Kaylyn’s amazing positive affirmation clothing–I will need some uplifting work out gear for this half marathon training!

Look at all those people in one kitchen! Those of you who have ever been around while I’m cooking must know I had to take a deep breath not to freak out about everyone being in there at once! Haha. Well the rule is “If you’re in the kitchen, you have to be functional.” Everyone was 🙂

Doesn’t Josh look fancy in his apron? Somehow he ended up with the frilliest one with a boob outline and everything. Hot.

Pre-baked polenta souffle

Steve went to take pictures from the outside to be artsy. Obviously, I was having a blast.

Good job, Bethy and Jasy!

Bring on the meat!!!

My FAV!!! The zucchini gratin. Zucchini + goat cheese + heavy cream. How can you go wrong?

Polenta!!

Once we all finally sat down to dinner

My masterpiece!! Bread pudding with a bourbon butter sauce. Holy deliciousness.

TAAAAADDDDAAAAA!!!!!

It was seriously one of the best nights of my life and I can’t wait until the time when I can return and try again with a new menu. Until then, stay tuned for some skinnified versions!

Susan G Komen Race for the Cure Recap!

October 10, 2011 · by Ari ·

Hello friends! It has been a super crazy weekend and the business just keeps coming.

Now for my very first ever RACE RECAP!!! Sunday morning Steve and I woke up bright and early at 5:45 to get ready and head out for the race. I’d hardly slept because I was so excited/nervous/anxious to participate in my first race. We met Jason at his house and then headed into downtown Phoenix where thousands of people had gathered to participate in this event. It was pretty inspiring how many people had devoted their early Sunday morning to be there. When we arrived, we met up with Nacho and wandered around a little checking out the different booths.

Those super cute pink shorts were purchased special on Saturday for the race. I wanted to be festively pink from head to toe from the occasion. Even my socks were pink, but you can’t see them in this picture 🙂

Steve wandered off to play photographer while Jason, Nacho and I got ready for the race. As we were getting ready, the breast cancer survivors lined up for their run which began shortly before ours. As soon as I saw them lining up I got unexpectedly emotional. Something about seeing people who have survived something so big out there running–it just hit something and we all know I’m a big emotional basket case anyway. After they took off, I pulled it together and got ready to begin myself.

Of course today of all days Pandora decided to totally suck. I couldn’t get my application to load on my phone and from then on my music was intermittent to non existent. Boo. Anyway, they counted us off and I immediately became annoyed by the crowd of people in front of me keeping my pace to a slow crawl. I have a patience problem. I’m aware of it. I’m working on it, but it’s not getting better fast enough.

Finally after about 5 minutes, the crowd thinned out enough for me to find my own pace. This is where I made my big mistake. I wanted to make up time, plus my adrenaline was kicking. Add that to being a super competitive person (I have a hard time when children beat me in board games), and you get the big mistake of starting off too fast for your own good. Of course later that day I read on an other blog how starting off too fast in the beginning is the fastest way to kill your time. I started running at an 8:50-9:00 pace, which considering my fastest pace for a similar distance was 9:40, was way too fast for my running fitness level.

A little after the 2 mile mark, it really started to hit me. I got a big cramp in my side (who gets cramps?!) and my tummy started to really bug me. Finally, I gave in to my body and took a few walking breaks. I was so upset because I really wanted to run the whole thing, but I had just worn myself out too quickly and knew I was going to have to walk a little if I wanted to keep going. Finally, I turned a corner and could see the finish line. I got so excited, and I wanted to make up for the lost time in my walking breaks, so I began sprinting towards it. Unfortunately, it was further away than it looked. So deceiving, that finish line! Meanwhile, I’m running at a 7:40 pace (yes, I do check my Garmin pretty religiously–it’s new and shiny!), and feeling like I’m about to die, but you canNOT stop, walk, or slow down once the finish line is in sight–isn’t that some sort of unwritten rule? Well it was in my brain, so I chugged along, and once I finally crossed that finish line, my stomach pains came full force and I wanted to collapse on the ground. It felt so much harder than I imagined it would considering I have run this distance and longer! But I definitely learned a valuable lesson about pacing myself. If anyone had told me to slow down at the beginning of the race, there is no way I would have listened. I just needed to experience it myself.

I REALLY wanted to finish in under 30 minutes. Well my friends, that didn’t happen. Not even close. But, even with my lame-o walking breaks, I still managed to finish with an average pace of 9:58 which isn’t too bad for my very first race.

As I caught my breath, I went to meet Steve, but we had location difficulties and I ended up waiting by myself until Jason and Nacho came up to meet me. Of course, as I was sitting there alone, I became a much less than perfect wife and got super grumpy with Steve because I wanted to see him the second I crossed the finish line. I really wanted to share the moment with him, but it ended up that by the time I saw Jason and Nacho, it almost didn’t feel real anymore. I expected to feel this huge sense of accomplishment, but all I could think about how I didn’t meet my goals and how if a 5K was this hard, how am I ever going to run a half marathon in January?! So unproductive, I know! Who finishes their first race and can’t enjoy it?! My attitude needs a serious adjustment, otherwise it’s just going to make things harder! Does anyone else have a really hard time feeling accomplished and not focusing on what could have been better?

After a while, we finally met up with Steve and headed to brunch at St Francis! As soon as I looked at the brunch menu, I immediately wanted to order everything on it, as well as a cocktail at 10am. Is that bad? 🙂 Well, I did not ending ordering a drink, and tried to order mindfully because we had plans later that evening to take a cooking class (more on that awesomeness to come!) To start, we got an order of the fingerling potatoes to share.

Jason and Steve won best menu selection with their skillet of red wine marinated pot roast and eggs. I had a bite. It was pretty much like heaven in your mouth.

I ordered an egg white omelet with goat cheese, and marinated mushrooms and onions. It was the perfect balance of healthy and delicious, and they gave me so many mushroom! Yum!

I even had one of the pieces of bread with some delicious raspberry jam. It may have been my favorite part of the whole meal. Wait, actually my favorite part was my one bite of Steve’s food. Must recreate somehow.

After we finished eating, we posed for some post race photos.I decided that even though it was a non competitive race, we were the winners and should pose as such. And because I finished first, I was in first place and needed to stand higher up in the middle. Obviously.

You can see my pink socks in this one! ^^^

I absolutely love these guys and I am so glad I got to experience my first race with them! When Jason and I were talking he said “I just never would have believed it if anyone would have told me I would be doing this with you.” Sometimes it’s easy to forget where you came from. The first time I attempted to run on a treadmill, I quit after 10 seconds. “I can’t do it.” I said to my friend Mandie. Convinced I was right. Convinced that it wasn’t an excuse.

My personal running mantra that I always repeat to myself when things get tough is “I can do anything.” To me, that sums everything up. I never thought I could lose 70 lbs. When my entire life revolved around food and counting my calories, I never thought I would find balance between who I was before and who I had become. I never thought I would reach my goal of participating in a race–any race. And I certainly never thought I would announce to the world that I was training for a half marathon. I also never thought I would be able to learn how to dance or sing, or be good enough to get my BFA. But every single goal I have put my mind to in life, I have achieved. I can do anything.

The first time I wrote this post, I pressed published and it all disappeared. I freaked out a little, cried, and then went to write round two. But the first time, I didn’t get to the part where I reflected where I came from, and as someone who believes everything happens for a reason, maybe I needed to start over so that I could give myself a little credit, and remind myself that I.Can.Do.Anything. You know what? So can you.

Thanks for reading, everyone. This one is pretty important to me 🙂

Bekki’s Birthday Dinner

October 3, 2011 · by Ari ·

Good morning friends! I started off today by returning to bodyworks class for the first time in I think 3 weeks? Craziness. Kara has been working Monday mornings and I have been too lame to go by myself, but today I put my butt into gear and went all on my lonesome. I’ll admit, it is not as fun alone, but I need to be able to go to classes for what I get out of them, and not just when I have plans with someone else to go. Especially considering my gym buddy is going out of town for a whole weeeeeek! Boooo. I’m going to miss you friend! But bodyworks was fantastic as always and it was good to get some strength training in. My solo plan for the week is

Tues and Thurs: Spin

Wed and Fri: Run & yoga

Sat: Rest

Sun: Run for the Cure 5K!! My official first race ever!

Backing up, yesterday I made those fabulous Salted Caramel Mocha Brownie Cupcakes to celebrate Bekki’s birthday. By the time Steve and I headed over to Riga Tony’s at 7:15, I was so hungry I was ready to start chewing my arm off. I don’t do hunger well. That must be why I usually eat all the time 🙂 Thank goodness for the bread and appetizer salad they brought out almost immediately! The staff were so friendly and accommodating of our huge loud group.

I had never been there before, but I’d always heard great things. I loved the way it looked and the atmosphere.

When we arrived, they brought us all our these super cute little wine shots. Have you ever heard of a wine shot? I did not shoot it. I sipped mine. Like a lady. I knew hardly anyone, so I spent most of the evening chatting with the Starbucks crew. I was SOOOOO happy because my amazing friend Amelia came! She was the officiant in our wedding and she also gave us the BEST wedding gift…CLEMENTINE! I’ve hardly seen her since then, so it kind of made my night!

The rest of the usual Starbucks crew was also there of course

Bekki announced that she likes taking pictures where her mouth looks huge.

Everyone loved the cupcakes….HOORAY!

I love these girls and I am so happy that I’ve been seeing them more lately! I love having lots of different groups of friends that all fulfill different aspects of my personality! And of course, I love this guy and his constant amazing photos! 🙂

The highlight of my weekend

September 25, 2011 · by Ari ·

I have a confession. Working this much definitely makes me want to drink more. Earlier this week after setting one of the biggest numbers in the show, I felt exhausted and came home, went straight to the fridge and grabbed a pumpkin ale. Then Friday night, I called Steve on my way home and asked if he wanted to get out of the house. We ended up at the Santan Brewery, each had a beer and called it a night. Then last night we had dinner plans with Jason after I got out of rehearsal. First we met up at hise house and I got to see my favorite niece Nico!

Nico, look at the camera!

I was tired from rehearsal and wanted iced coffee in a bad way. We stopped at a Starbucks that closed at 6pm. It was 6:01. Honestly, FML. So we popped into this old 50s-esque shop that claimed to serve coffee. All I saw on the menu was burgers and ice cream. Both things I loved, but we already had a dinner spot in mind. On the plus side, it was connected to this super cute vintage shop where Steve got to be artsy with the camera.

Finally, we went to a different Starbucks (I have a Starbucks problem), I got my iced coffee and we were off to dinner. We had decided to go to The Main Ingredient, a super cute restaurant downtown with fun outdoor seating. It used to be a house and is right on the corner of an old neighborhood. There was this super cool water fixture in the side yard area. We thought it was neat 🙂

The second I picked up the menu, I noticed this baby

White chocolate ale? Are you kidding me?! It might be my favorite beer ever. It is sweet, but still bubbly and not super heavy. Steve was supposed to share with me (it was 22 oz!), but then he took like three sips and gave me the rest. Yeah, thanks for that 🙂

Jason ordered one too. We were both pretty impressed. For dinner, I got a roasted veggie and goat cheese sandwich on focaccia bread. They give you a choice between salad or chips. I ALWAYS choose salad. I don’t know what came over me, but I ordered mine with chips!

Then ended up eating a total of about 4 chips haha. I guess I just wanted the option. But honestly, my sandwich and my beer were so delicious that I was set! Then, we migrated over to Four Peaks because I had never been there and they just recently came out with their seasonal Pumpkin Porter!

Jas and I got the pumpkin (duhhh—SOOOO good!, but white chocolate ale was better!) and Steve got some fruity beer. He cracks me up with his drinks. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him order a wine cooler if it was an option 🙂

On the way there, we had a natural disaster experience when we got stuck in a sudden 90 second dust storm. There were winds of what must have been very high mileage and rain and dust, and then in 90 seconds, it was back to being 95 degrees and still. Oh Phoenix. Once we got seated, it was like we were all 16 again or something. We were being totally immature, but cracking ourselves and each other up. I haven’t laughed that hard in such a long time. Jason seriously has one of the best senses of humor of anyone I have ever met. We always find the same things hilarious and laugh when no one else does. We saw Scary Movie 2 together about 7 times and laughed so hard every single time. Plus Steve always knows how to make me laugh. Jason gave us a fascinating demonstraion of how to smell and taste your beer which Steve captured perfectly on camera.

Then I had a surprise run in with my friends Kelsey, Marisa and Liz. I love those ladies and I hadn’t seen them in forever! It was such a nice surprise! We ended the night by meeting Bethany for frozen yogurt at Yo Love after a navigation experience that was so funny I could never fully explain. Seriously, I just spent the entire night laughing my face off. I really really love my friends!

Celebrating My Spin Buddy!

September 19, 2011 · by Ari ·

Today is my wonderful, amazing friend Kara’s birthday! You may recognize her from yoga, spin, or bodyworks. Last night, a group of us went to Gordon Biersch to celebrate.

Ok, so would you like to know just how addicted to Starbucks I really am? I promise, it’s related. I met Kara because she is a barista at one of my Starbucks (yes, I have 2 that I go to–one by the gym, and one by the house. Don’t judge me). In addition, every single other person I knew at this table (other than Stevie of course), I know from Starbucks as well. When they start inviting you to their birthday dinners, you may have a problem. OR you just might be so cool that everyone you encounter wants to be your friend. Let’s go with that one!

We had a super fun night. I was actually a little nervous because other than Kara and her roommate Charlie, I had never really interacted with anyone there outside of Starbucks or the gym, and sometimes, believe it or not, I get pretty shy and nervous around new people, but everyone welcomed into their group and was super nice and I had a great time. Of course someone as amazing as Kara would come with great company!

Bekki hates pictures, but she’s so pretty!

Of course, I made dessert!

Which Kara and I fed to each other

It was a great night and I was happy to be able to celebrate with everyone! And of course while we were leaving, Steve had to stop and take more pictures 🙂

His pictures are getting so good! Visit his blog and send him some love! 🙂
